Guam Charter School Deadline: SIFA Must Secure Campus

Guam’s educational scene is in a bit of a shake-up, especially for fans of STEM and charter schools. The Guam Academy Charter Schools Council has set a deadline for the Science Is Fun and Awesome Learning Academy (SIFA) to secure a new school site. After vacating its Tiyan location in June, this charter school has been juggling temporary digs at a former elementary school, leaving students and parents in a bit of a chaotic limbo.

Senator Jesse Lujan has been directly in touch with concerned parents. Many are worried about where their kids will end up, especially with the grind of online learning creeping back into the picture. As classes began this week at Guam Department of Education schools, some SIFA students have already made the leap, demonstrating just how desperate families are for stability. “Where can they go?” Lujan stressed, underlining the urgent need for a reliable option for those who prefer the charter school system.

What’s more, the council has made it clear: They want a physical address from SIFA, and they want it now. Lujan emphasized the importance of not leaving families in the dark any longer. Meanwhile, while some charter schools, like the Business Technology Academy, are eyeing expansion into middle school grades, Chairwoman Evangeline Cepeda is keeping things on hold due to capacity concerns. The council needs to hammer out some details before they can bring in new students.

There’s a ray of hope, though. Lujan mentioned he’s heard whispers that SIFA might have a location in mind. However, time-consuming inspections and preparations stand in the way. While SIFA works out its next moves, Lujan encourages the council to identify other charter schools ready to swap students around—because let’s face it: every gamer knows the importance of a solid squad.

As the dust settles, it’s essential for stakeholders to keep the community in the loop. Gamers are used to quick updates and transparency, and the education sector could definitely take a page out of that playbook. Here’s hoping SIFA locks in a new home soon, so students can get back to what really matters—learning and growing in a supportive environment.
