Pet Blessing Celebration at Santa Barbara Catholic School
At Santa Barbara Catholic School in Dededo, last week’s gathering looked less like a typical school day and more like a real-life episode of “Animal Planet.” Students, families, and a whole menagerie of pets turned out for a beloved tradition—the pet blessing in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi, the ultimate animal lover.
This event wasn’t just a parade of paws and feathers; it was a celebration of the special bond we share with our furry (and scaly) friends. Deacon Romy Hernandez led the prayer ceremony, ensuring that creatures ranging from loyal dogs and playful cats to chickens and even a turtle received their divine blessing. It was a heartwarming sight that made everyone stop and appreciate the presence of pets in our lives.
Faith Formation director Mariel Tesoro summed it up well: “These pets are companions on our journey, reminding us of our call to be stewards of God’s creation.” This sentiment hits close to home, especially for gamers who often find comfort and friendship in their pets while embarking on epic quests and leveling up in digital worlds.
8th graders Giovanna and Kairra Verango brought their poodle, Stella, to soak up some divine vibes. Giovanna expressed her hopes, saying they want Stella to “feel the presence of God and be blessed for all the animal years of her life.” Meanwhile, others had simpler reasons—like one student who brought his pet because “he’s so cute.” Who can resist that logic?
And the event wasn’t just a spiritual experience; it was also a rare chance for students to break the norm of school life. For many, bringing their creatures to class was like rolling a rare loot drop—a real treat after lessons. Kairra loved showing off Stella, saying, “It’s really rare to show your dog, and I wanted her to enjoy this as long as she’s not stressed.”
As the students fawned over each other’s pets and shared stories, it solidified a bond that resonates beyond the classroom—a reminder of the joy and companionship animals bring into our lives.
