Celebrating Community: GDOE and Public Health Team Up for Village Play Time

Step away from your screens for a moment, gamers. In a vibrant mashup of education and community support, the Guam Department of Education (GDOE) teamed up with Public Health to host a day filled with fun at the Dededo Sports Complex. This event, “Village Play Time,” was all about celebrating Head Start Awareness Month and marking 60 years of a program that’s been laying down the foundation for countless kids on the island.

On this day, families and educators came together for what was hailed as the “Biggest Play Time of the Year.” Kicking off with a lively parade and a proclamation signing, the day unfolded into a festival filled with games and activities tailored for the island’s youngest learners. Angelina Lape, director of the Head Start Program at GDOE, emphasized the impact of this initiative. “Over the past 60 years, we’ve supported over 30,000 children, and today, we’re celebrating those journeys,” she said.

For many attendees, the event was a heartfelt reunion. Lape shared her own experience, recalling how Head Start shaped her as a child. “I was a Head Start kid myself! It’s amazing to be back as the program director, and I always tell our families, the sky’s the limit for your kids if they have the right support at this age.” Lape’s dedication is palpable, and that same spirit was echoed throughout the event.

This year, GDOE brought in partners like Public Health to ensure families left not just entertained but also informed about vital services. Deputy Director Amanda Shelton highlighted how they provided immunizations and essential support in a fun, stress-free environment. “We know many of our clients are kids, so being here at Village Play Time makes it easier for parents—offer health services while they focus on enjoying the day with their kids,” Shelton explained.

With future events planned, like family reading nights and workshops, GDOE and Public Health are building a strong, supportive community for families. For us in the gaming and tech scene, it’s a reminder that just like in our favorite games, collaboration makes a community stronger. This is just the beginning of what these organizations aim to achieve together, ensuring the next generation is not only ready for school but also confident in their journeys ahead.
