CNMI Mango Ban: Protecting Guam from Invasive Pests

Mango Madness: Protecting Guam from a Pest Threat

Heads up, Guam! In a move that’ll affect all fruit lovers and gamers alike, the CNMI has placed a temporary ban on mango imports after researchers spotted an invasive pest going to town on our beloved mangoes in Saipan. Dubbed the Mango Fruit Borer, this little menace is munching on the flesh and seeds of mangoes, and it could soon hit our shores if we’re not careful.

Just a couple of months back, during a routine investigation on Saipan, some researchers from the University of Guam stumbled upon this pest. Christopher Rosario, the biosecurity chief, described the scene: “On one of the mango trees, there was this larva, this worm, chewing up the inside of the mangoes.” A DNA test confirmed their worst fears: we’ve got a major mango problem on our hands.

The Mango Fruit Borer is no ordinary pest; it hails from Southeast Asia and Australia and can seriously damage crops. Once it lays its eggs on a mango, the larvae bore into the fruit itself, making it tough to spot without a microscope. Even our local mango pests, like the mango seed weevil, don’t pose a similar threat since they only target the seed. This invasive species could wreak “devastating” havoc if it hops over to Guam.

Currently, the Department of Agriculture is restricting mango imports from the CNMI until they can figure out how to safeguard our island’s mango crop. Rosario stressed the urgency: “We’re trying to figure out if it’s already here. It could mean a big loss for our mangoes, a staple in our culture.” Mangoes are a big deal around here, with festivals celebrating their juicy sweetness—and nobody wants that threatened.

For the time being, let’s keep an eye out while enjoying our backyard fruits. If you spot any suspicious larvae munching away on your mangoes, ring the Guam Pest Hotline at (671) 475-PEST (7378). Keep those mango trees safe so we can all relish those sweet treats for years to come!
