Catholic Social Services Ends Respite Care Today: What’s Next?
Catholic Social Services’ announcement to cease respite and in-home care services from September 30 has sent shockwaves through the Guam community, particularly among families caring for vulnerable loved ones. The news hit hard just a week before the cut-off date, leading to widespread concern among those relying on these essential services for their daily routines.
Acting DISID Director Reuel Drilon assured families that there’s no need to panic. He emphasized that the clients currently with CSS will transition smoothly into DISID’s in-home care program, which he claims offers more flexibility and additional service hours based on individual needs. While the abrupt notice from CSS raised eyebrows—especially for families caught off-guard—Drilon reassured that his team has already begun working on the transition to avoid service disruptions.
Senator Shelly Calvo, who chairs the Legislative Committee on Disability Services, voiced her frustrations over the communication breakdown, labeling the last-minute announcement as “eleventh-hour.” Her concerns echo through the gaming community too; just as we support one another in our digital quests, maintaining robust support systems for our families is crucial in the real world. Families need reliable backup on their most challenging days.
Drilon clarified that funding isn’t the issue here; in fact, the new arrangement could provide more cost-effective service. Rather than the previous model that capped assistance at just 16 hours a month for 35 clients, the DISID program aims to cater to needs more effectively. This kind of flexibility is both a relief and a vital lifeline to those maneuvering through care challenges—something we know a lot about in gaming when we strategize for tougher levels.
As the clock ticks down to October 1, families are left to gauge if the promises of continuity hold true in practice. Just like our favorite games, where every detail matters, families are hoping that these changes lead to a smoother gameplay experience in their everyday lives. It’s a waiting game right now, and we all know how that feels!
