“Current Homelessness Statistics in Guam: Key Insights”
How Many on Guam are Homeless? A Deep Dive into the Numbers
In the bustling world of gaming and tech, we often think about leveling up our skills, but sometimes we forget to look around at our community. Recently, at the 3rd Annual Housing and Homelessness Summit held at the University of Guam, real talk surfaced about a serious issue: homelessness. If you game here in Guam, this affects us all, and it’s worth knowing the numbers.
Aja Ramos, chairperson of the Guam Homeless Coalition, made it her mission to quantify the sometimes overlooked reality of homelessness on our island. During the summit, she pulled data from the Homeless Management Information System to give us a snapshot of who’s in need. On November 20, 2024, there were 1,054 people living without a home on Guam. That’s a lot of lives impacted, and it’s time we dive deeper into who makes up those numbers.
Breaking it down, the majority—almost 60%—were single adults, while around 27.7% were families with children. The stats start to hit home when we realize 40% of the homeless population are kids under 17. Think about that for a moment: how many future gamers and creators do we have navigating tough times? That kind of data should light a fire under all of us to rally for change.
One critical issue highlighted at the summit was the plight of domestic violence victims who often find themselves homeless after fleeing their situation. When Ramos looked at the demographics, she emphasized that males topped the charts for homelessness, but the presence of vulnerable youth is alarming. Questions arose: Are there enough family shelters? How do we ensure that these kids have safe places to land?
Ramos also pointed out how important it is to create targeted programs for those most affected. With 40.4% of the homeless population aged 25-55, the need for tailored resources is clear. To tackle this issue head-on, we must come together as a community, just like we do in our favorite games, to strategize, develop solutions, and make our island a better place for everyone.
