Guam Celebrates National Employ Older Workers Week
The Guam Department of Labor really hit the nail on the head with their recent celebration of National Employ Older Workers Week (NEOWW). This isn’t just about nostalgia for the good ol’ days—it’s about recognizing the mad skills and years of wisdom that our older workers bring to the table. For anyone involved in gaming, tech, or even just living in Guam, this week is a reminder that experience is as valuable as the latest hardware upgrades.
At a lively luncheon held at Capitol Kitchen, folks came together to kick off the festivities and discuss the importance of including mature workers in the workforce. NEOWW, celebrated every last full week of September, aims to highlight how these seasoned pros make a huge impact in industries all around us. Just like in multiplayer games, where veteran players often help newbies level up, older workers can guide the next generation to success.
Acting Governor Josh Tenorio took a moment to spotlight the vital roles that the manåmko’ (elderly) fill in our community. They’re not just reminiscing; they’re leading, coaching, and sharing skills in critical sectors like education and healthcare. Their continued involvement isn’t just beneficial—it strengthens entire teams, much like a well-balanced squad in gaming.
One key program making waves is the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP). This initiative specifically caters to those aged 55 and up, helping them gain new skills through paid community service and on-the-job training. Think of it as a unique lifeline for older workers, equipping them with modern skills that can seamlessly transition into traditional jobs. It’s like upgrading your character’s skillset—essential for staying relevant in any arena.
GDOL Director David Dell’Isola also made sure to highlight their ongoing quest for support from the U.S. Department of Labor, ensuring that these avenues for older workers stay alive and well. Just as we gamers seek the right gear and upgrades to keep our edge, this commitment ensures that our older workforce is prepped and ready for whatever challenges the job market throws their way. Overall, it’s a strong call to action for everyone in Guam’s gaming and tech community to appreciate and support our elder players, both on and off the field.
