Join UOG’s GROW Initiative Tree-Planting This Saturday
This Saturday, your gaming break could come with a dose of real-world impact. The University of Guam’s Center for Island Sustainability and Sea Grant is kicking off their GROW initiative with a tree-planting event at the Ugum Watershed, and you’re invited to level up this experience—hands-on style!
From 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., the Guam Restoration of Watersheds Initiative is rolling out the welcome mat for volunteers. It’s a perfect chance to throw on those favorite outdoor duds, lace up some closed-toe shoes, and dive into some real-life eco-centric quests. You’ll also be helping protect our island’s waters and coastal ecosystems—a cause worth getting your hands dirty for.
“GROW in Malojloj is where we start our planting season, and it’s open for everyone,” says GROW Project Lead Joshua Muña. Whether you’re a casual gamer or a full-on eco-warrior, this event is your chance to get some hands-on experience in making a positive impact. The Ugum Watershed is critical for our island’s environment, providing cool habitats for wildlife and keeping our water supply in check. By planting trees, you’re helping reduce soil erosion and improve water quality—no in-game cheat codes here!
Just a heads up: wear comfortable clothes and bring your own reusable water bottle to stay hydrated. Don’t stress about the gloves; they’ll be provided, and so will plenty of water. The further GROW series will also spring up on Saturdays, with events set for September 6, October 4, and November 8, 2025. If you’re in a clan or community group, or even looking for some serious service-learning credits, this is a fantastic way to roll up your sleeves with your fellow gamers.
To find your way to the event, you’ll want to scope out the location map on social media—follow @uogseagrant for updates. Show up, get ready to unlock some new skills, and help build a greener Guam, one tree at a time. Let’s channel that gaming spirit into something that nourishes our island—the ultimate quest for a healthier planet!
