University of Guam’s REEF Internship Boosts Sustainability

The University of Guam just dropped a game-changer for students in all fields: the new REEF Internship program. If you thought sustainability was just about whipping up eco-friendly projects in science labs, think again! This initiative from the Center for Island Sustainability and Sea Grant is leveling up opportunities for everyone—whether you’re studying psychology, engineering, or business.

The Research Education and Extension Fellowship (REEF) mixes disciplines to tackle sustainability. UOG’s Director Dr. Austin Shelton emphasizes that we all have a role to play in sustainable development, not just those with science degrees. This isn’t just an academic exercise; it’s about real-world impacts. The program is designed to give you hands-on experience, with mentorship from industry pros who are seriously passionate about making Guam a greener place.

Meet the 2025 REEF interns, a diverse crew ready to take on environmental challenges. They come from various backgrounds:

– Kaitylyn Punzalan (UOG)
– Napu Blas (Dartmouth)
– Faith David (UOG)
– Tory Damien (UOG)
– Zachary Keller (UOG)
– Ian Gaza (GCC)
– And many more!

These fellows will dive into a 20-week paid fellowship, working closely with mentors on projects involving conservation, waste management, and other pressing sustainability issues facing the region. It’s a perfect blend of gaining experience and contributing to community-focused solutions.

UOG Provost Dr. Sharleen Santos-Bamba is all about this investment in young talent, hoping it will inspire the next generation. So, if you’re passionate about Guam’s future—whatever your major—you might just find your place in this program. Keep an eye out for opportunities like this; they’re the key to leveling up not only your career but also the entire island’s approach to sustainability. No matter your area of expertise, there’s a vital role for you in keeping Guam thriving!
