UOG Launches Introductory GIS Training Course in October
Level Up Your Skills: Introductory GIS Training at UOG
Gamers and tech enthusiasts, listen up! The University of Guam is rolling out a five-day training course on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) from October 13 to 17, 2025. Whether you’re a professional looking for new tools or just curious about how mapping software works, this is your chance to dive into the world of GIS—an essential tech tool that’s gaining traction in fields ranging from environmental management to urban planning.
This course isn’t just a bunch of lectures; it’s a hands-on experience designed to give you practical skills. Over 20 hours, participants will learn the ropes of collecting spatial data, mapping, analyzing, and visualizing information. Think of it as unlocking a new skill tree in your favorite RPG. You’ll get to use industry-standard tools to solve real-world issues, making those in-game strategies feel even more relevant—after all, it’s all about planning and problem-solving!
Dr. Jose Edgardo L. Aban, an assistant professor of geography and your go-to guide for the course, emphasizes how GIS can help you turn raw geographic data into insights that matter. It’s not just about making maps; it’s about making informed decisions that can impact communities and the environment around us. With our island home of Guam being rich in unique challenges, understanding GIS could empower you to contribute to innovative solutions.
Classes run daily from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Geographic Information Learning Laboratory (GILLs) on the UOG campus in Mangilao. Everything will be laid out in the Humanities and Social Sciences Building, making it easy to find.
If you’re ready to level up, the registration fee is $300, so grab your spot early—space is limited! You can pre-register online, making it as easy as entering a game lobby.
